Human Design Chart Explained

A coloured centre is defined: it works in the same way for you every day. A white centre is open: it is changeable and picks up whatever is around it. Open is not a flaw — it is where most of your wisdom about other people comes from.

Each of the 64 numbers on the chart is a gate, and each gate is half of a connection. When both gates at either end are activated, the channel is complete and the two centres it joins become defined. An activated gate with nothing on the other end is a hanging gate — a flavour that switches on when someone else brings the missing half.

In the chart above, 2 channels are complete: 34-57 (Power), 27-50 (Preservation). Hanging gates: 12 Caution, 64 Confusion.

• Manifestor — Built to start things, in bursts, on your own initiative. Strategy: Inform before you act.
• Generator — Real, renewable energy for work you genuinely respond to. Strategy: Wait to respond.
• Manifesting Generator — Fast, multi-track energy — respond first, then tell people. Strategy: Respond, then inform.
• Projector — Built to see and guide others, not to out-work them. Strategy: Wait for the invitation.
• Reflector — Entirely open — a mirror of the people and places around you. Strategy: Wait a lunar cycle before big decisions.

Authority is decided by precedence, not preference. A defined Solar Plexus always wins, so clarity comes over time. Otherwise a defined Sacral speaks in the moment, then the Spleen, then the Heart, then the G centre. Only when none of those are defined does a Projector fall back on talking things through, and a Reflector waits out a lunar cycle.

• Emotional — No truth in the high or the low — only in the settling.
• Sacral — The gut response in the moment, before the mind arrives.
• Splenic — A quiet instinct that speaks once and does not repeat itself.
• Ego Manifested — Listen to what you hear yourself promise out loud.
• Ego Projected — The truth is in what you want, spoken to someone who will listen.
• Self-projected — Hear yourself talk it through — the answer is in your own voice.
• Mental — No inner authority — the environment and the right sounding boards decide.
• Lunar — Give a big decision roughly 28 days and see whether it still holds.

• 2 — Hermit — Natural talent that works best undisturbed, until it is called out.
• 3 — Martyr — Learns by trial, error and personal collision.

A profile puts two of those lines together — the conscious Sun line first, the unconscious Sun line second. Only twelve combinations occur.

• 2/4 — Natural talent that works best when called out by people who know you.

• No Definition — Nothing is fixed — everything here is sampled from the surroundings.
• Single Definition — All defined centres are joined up. Self-contained, and quick to feel whole.
• Split Definition — Two separate areas of definition. Certain people bridge the gap and feel like relief.
• Triple Split Definition — Three separate areas. Busy inside; needs varied company and time.
• Quadruple Split Definition — Four separate areas. Slow, deliberate, and unusually consistent once settled.

A chart is built twice. The personality side uses the planets at the exact moment of birth, and it is the part you recognise about yourself. The design side uses the sky roughly 88 days earlier — measured as 88 degrees of the Sun's travel — and it is the part other people notice before you do. Where both sides activate the same gate, it is coloured for both.

The two arrows at the top describe the mind: on the left, the environment that suits you, and on the right, how your perspective takes in information. The two at the bottom describe the body: determination, or how you take things in, and motivation, or what quietly drives you. They are read from the tone of a single activation, which is why they only appear when a birth time is known.
